After his personal life collapses, Nao joins the planetary Space Force with little concern for his own future and imagines that a dramatic military career might at least give his life meaning. Instead, he proves unexpectedly competent. Assigned to command a unit of misfits sent into dangerous situations, Nao keeps surviving missions everyone expects to go badly and gradually acquires a heroic reputation he never set out to earn.
