Ellie is unemployed, deeply in debt, and close to losing her home when an encounter with a monster reveals two things at once: supernatural creatures are real, and she has latent psychic abilities. A paranormal detective named Ichabod—distinguished by the jack-o’-lantern he has instead of an ordinary head—offers her work as his partner. The new job pulls Ellie into nighttime cases involving demons, spirits, and hidden magical forces while she learns what her own powers can do.
