Student Raskolnikov murders an elderly pawnbroker while convinced that extraordinary people can stand above ordinary morality. Although another man is quickly arrested, Raskolnikov’s own ideas draw the suspicion of investigator Porfiry, while guilt becomes an increasingly powerful threat to the certainty that justified the crime.
