Young bard Torue wants material for an epic song and finds it in Ran, a disgraced hunter who fights monsters capable of consuming both people and the corruption they carry. Destroying these creatures requires hunters to absorb their impurities themselves, making every victory personally dangerous. Torue chooses to travel with Ran and record his deeds, discovering that the truth behind a heroic ballad is far more complicated than simply watching a warrior defeat monsters.
