After a painful middle-school band competition, Kumiko Oumae enters Kitauji High School unsure whether she still wants music in her life. She joins the concert band again and finds an ensemble with more internal conflict and bad habits than ambition. A demanding new adviser sets the goal of reaching nationals, forcing Kumiko and her classmates to confront both the technical work of becoming better musicians and the insecurities that made them settle for less.
