Overworked office employee Souta Matoi stops to watch a traditional Japanese performance after a long day and notices something impossible: one of the actors appears to have cat ears. The performer is a bakeneko, a shapeshifting cat spirit, who soon approaches Souta directly and declares that the two are destined to become mates. Souta’s exhausted ordinary life is abruptly replaced by a supernatural relationship he never asked for and cannot easily explain away.
