Lonely sixth grader Wataru follows a mysterious voice into the mountains and meets Peke, a small creature unlike anything he has seen before. He soon discovers a hidden system in which children form partnerships with monsters and are pushed into dangerous contests against other pairs. What first looks like a chance at friendship becomes a struggle to survive rules created by people willing to use both children and creatures as weapons.
